What are we trying to achieve

The ability to interact with the web over voice recognition opens a new channel of communication. Voice recognition can do to touch what touch has done to physical keyboards, which is, making a number of components unnecessary. While many people try to teach their parents and grandparents how to surf the web, most find it challenging to acclimatize them to the poorly placed computer components. Even after they take cognizance of the functional requirements of the components, it is a tedious task for them to type a sentence on a keyboard that is not alphabetically arranged or to drag the mouse pointer from one corner of the screen to the other to simply click a button. The frustration of the impatient makes you wonder if the QWERTY keyboard and the harmless mouse are amongst the worst User Experience designs ever. Innovation of perceptual computing has made it easier to interact with computers in the recent years. Although consumers still have a soft corner for the vintage keyboard and the mouse; virtual touchscreens have largely started dominating. The haptics (touch vibrations) combined with visual and audio input can fool your brain into thinking that you’ve just pressed a physical key. But putting the smartphones aside, the idea of expensive touchscreen consumer computers over the traditional style is worth some contemplation. Voice is the best means of communication between humans. We finally have enough compute power to do what we want from science fiction. Everything can be made immersive when you’d like to work with your computer the same way you work with a human. It would encourage and invite people that are physically challenged or are afraid of computers or are simply reluctant to learn because they think that the internet is complicated.

How will I benefit ?

People like doing work that makes use of their personality compared to quietly conforming to the environment set up by their computer. Internet has a tremendous potential to broaden the lives and independence of people with disabilities too. Those who have difficulty leaving their homes can now log in and order groceries, shop for appliances, research health questions, participate in online discussions, catch up with friends or make new ones. People who have difficult holding a pen or using a keyboard can use speech recognition to write letters, pay bills or perform work-related tasks. Our goal is to nurture such technology and decrease the duration and complexity of the interaction with the internet. 60% of the internet consumers use “Google Chrome” as their default browser. So instead of developing a separate voice-controlled browser, we are integrating “Browse by Voice” functionality in Chrome itself in order to make the impact significant. Also, using the Chrome platform allows accessibility to Android, the most popular mobile operating system in the world.
